Fable
Several libraries are available in Albion. The Heroes' Guild has a large collection of books and a hidden library. Many villagers put books in their house. Books are also a vital subject in schools. Bowerstone also had its own library. However, Lady Grey sold it for profit after she became the mayor, making books a rare item in Bowerstone. This led to a quest in Fable: The Lost Chapters, Book Collection, to donate books to the school. All the books in the Heroes' Guild can be obtained multiple times.

Fable III
For a complete list of Fable III books see: Fable III Books and Rare Book Locations.
In Fable III, books are no longer used to learn new expressions for your Hero or teach your Dog new tricks. However, books are still used to improve your Dog's ability to find treasures and dig spots, to fight alongside you in battle and being able to help you impress villagers and NPCs with his/her charisma as you interact with them. The new Charisma stat acts similar to the previous functions of the Dog Tricks books as seen in Fable II.
The ability to buy books - which could be found in bookcases and other locations in Fable II - from a book shop such as Fiction Burns is no longer available in Fable III as there is no longer a shop for them but books for your Dog can still be found or bought at various stores in some regions of Fable III. Similarly, books can also still be found as you explore Albion but they are now mainly used in The Pen is Mightier... quest.

- In Fable, Fable: The Lost Chapters and Fable: Anniversary, certain books which are given to the teacher Mr. Gout during the Book Collection quest can have different dialogue depending on how far the player is in the game. For example: he will comment on Twinblade's book differently, based on if the Hero of Oakvale has already fought him or not.
